Always one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Member/Guest tournament had a strong turnout of 116 players. Near 100 degree heat didn’t deter stellar play from the field. Sterling Farms Golf Course played firm and fast. The greens seemed to roll on forever, testing even the best putters. If you hit the fairway you were rewarded with a generous roll out with how firm the fairways were.
The gross side of the tournament was a close one with Marc Schultz and Kevin Lauretti taking the top spot with a better ball score of 68. Lauretti, a former Sterling Farms Men’s Club club champion who recently moved up north, was the right choice for Schultz who is battling it out for one of the top eight spots in the Sentinel Maintenance Player of the Year. The top eight play one round for the right to be called player of the year in October. Two strokes behind were Jeremy Kowalski and Brian McClure with a 70. Rounding out the top five spots were Jason Denker and Bobby Frahm with a 73, Billy Lombardo and Sterling Farm’s Golf Course Executive Director Paul Grillo 74 and Frank Rubino and Greg Rosum 74.
With three net eagles, including two in their first five holes, George Triantayfyllos and Marc Robustelli, had a blistering score of a net 62 to take the top honors. Triantayfyllos, currently in 18th place in the player of the year standings welcomed the win. I would create an interesting situation if both Triantayfyllos brothers qualified for the final player of the year round. They may have to close Hope Pizza for the day! Second through sixth places were a match of cards with Bill Kaufman and Bart Price (66) coming in second, John McGroarty and Robert Hogan (66) coming in third, Michael Carriero and Chris Antonacci (66) were fourth, Mitchell Schepps and Tony Trugila (66) came in fifth and Dan Dwyer and Ian Duggan (66) coming in sixth. Kevin and Michael Troy finished in seventh with 67.
In addition to the gross and net portion of the tournament, there were a few individual honors. The longest drive winners were, Jeremy Kowalski (Member) and Ian Duggan (Guest). Closest to the line on nine were Marc Schultz (Member) and Dennis Dahm (Guest). Closest to pin on five went to Aidan McCann (Member) and Tom Cingari (Guest). Closest to pin on eight, Jon Mace (Member) and Steve Belport (Guest). Closest to pin 17, Mitchell Schepps (Member) and Charles Brennan (Guest).
A thank you to Angela Aulenti and her staff at Sterling Farms Golf Shop, Keith Handler and Kent Smith, for organizing the event, as well as James McIntosh for being the pro that the field tried to beat. James was a tough one to beat on Sunday hitting laser after laser right at the pin. It goes without saying, Mike Zody, the ultimate host of Zody’s at Sterling, provided a delicious spread for the meal afterwards and making sure everyone was taken care of and had their fill and more! Thanks, Mike! And a special thank you to our hole sponsors, Hope Pizza, Steven J. Carriero, dac group, A&P Citgo, Max Kolbrenner & Alexander, Anthony Marciano Agency, Classic Dry Cleaners, Rubino Brothers.
