Club Announcements

November 7, 2025: 2025 Annual Report

Now that our season has ended, as part of my duties as president, I am writing to you to inform you on the state of our club.

We ended the 2025 season with a total of 375 members…a decline in membership of -6.7% versus 2024 with difficulty of getting a tee time cited as our top reason for not renewing among non-resident members.  We operated 22 weekly events (unchanged vs. 2024) and continued our senior division which has allowed us to keep membership active amongst our senior golfers.  We maintained our major events such as the opening & closing, member member, member guest, Governor’s Cup, Club Championship, President Cup & Vice President Cup.  We also ran our expanded silly season for the months of October & November including Greenskeeper’s Revenge (thank you Mike!).  Last but not least we continued the traditional Player of the Year event, generously sponsored by Marc Schultz & Sentinel Maintenance.

With all these events, the club took in income of $116,974 and effectively managed expenses (weekly & major event pro shop prizes (29%), MGA membership (11%), event greens fees to SGA (24%), event food & beverage (19%), club operations (17%) including Golf Genius software, etc) totaling roughly the same amount ($116,531) with just a small profit of less than $500.  Aiding our income to offset expenses was the generous support of our members, tee sign sponsors, and platinum sponsors including:

  • Sentinel Maintenance (Marc Schultz)
  • Active Dog (Eric Bleile)
  • Coromandel Cuisine of India (Joji Parappallil)
  • Park Ford of Mahopac (Lenny Canora)
  • Pensiero Refuse (Tony Carlucci & Keith Pensiero)
  • Holiday Inn Express of New Rochelle (Jake Ninan)
  • Rubino Bros Scrap Iron & Metals (Frank Rubino)
  • BTU Systems (John Zebroski)
  • Open Tee Box.golf (Greg Collins)
  • Ocean North Pools (Matt Lueders)

We maintained our commitment to giving back to the community with our Scholarship program led by Jimmy Romaniello, Bart Weissman, and Bill Ward.  In 2025 we raised a total of $5,730 and awarded four scholarships paying out at $1,000 each to Jared Tedesco, Jack Lafeve, Lorenzo Scorziello, and Charles Cook. We now have $15,976 in scholarship funds which will allow us to sustain and expand our impact on the community as we enter 2026.

It is important to be reminded that the Sterling Farms Men’s Club is a public golf club and is run and organized by those who volunteer their time based on their passion and love of the game.  We could not have done all that without the support of our board of governors as well as the support and partnership from…

  • Bekim Ukperaj and the Stamford Golf Authority
  • Angela Aulenti (now retired) and her exceptional golf staff including Helen, Keith, Chris, Kent, & Jimmy
  • Mike Golden and his course maintenance staff
  • Ari & Tammy Thanos and the entire staff with the Royal Green

As we transition to 2026, I will enter my fourth term as club president and most governors will remain except for three departures. Pete Silver and Jonathan Arist (who both stepped down earlier this year) as well as Mitchell Schepps who will be leaving the board after two separate terms of service to the club.  Mitchell has been instrumental to our club who had the foresight to bring Golf Genius forward as a way to organize and operate our events.  If it were not for Mitch’s efforts, the club would not have been able to operate during the pandemic of 2020.  I want to thank Mitchell, Pete, and Jonathan for their service as well as all of our board members who served us in 2025.

Continuing to serve the club and remaining on the board for 2026 will be:

  • Joe McHugh – Officer / President
  • Dave Persaud – Officer / 1st Vice President
  • Seizo Mazer – Officer / 2nd Vice President
  • Tristan Chang – Officer / Treasurer
  • Jack McGroarty – Officer / Secretary
  • Bart Weissman – Tournament Chair
  • John McGroarty – Rules Chair
  • Greg Collins – Handicap Chair
  • Howard Kraus – Membership Chair
  • Jimmy Romaniello – Scholarship Chair
  • Joe Paladino – Community Service Chair
  • William Ward (in-house counsel)
  • Andrew Snyder
  • Chris Terzian
  • Bekim Ukperaj (honorary member)

These men selflessly volunteer their time to serve our club by organizing events, tournaments and handling club affairs.  They do this with both passion and dedication to our club, the game of golf, and our community.  I truly appreciate their time, service, and dedication.  I ask that you join me in thanking them and acknowledging their service to our club.

In closing, 2025 was another successful and enjoyable one for our club.  All of this would not be possible if it were not for you, our SFMC members!!!  The board and I thank you for your participation and support of the club and wish you and your families a joyful and safe holiday season!  I hope to see you in 2026!

Regards,
Joe McHugh

October 13, 2025: Congratulations to Angela Aulenti!!!

Please Join Me in Congratulating Angela on Her Retirement and Impact She Has Made on Our Community…

Where do I even begin?

Angela has created something truly rare at Sterling Farms — a family atmosphere where people genuinely care about each other. It’s not often you find a public facility that’s as client-focused, detail-oriented, and consistent as this place. That tone? That standard? It all started with Angela.

Of course, Bek, Keith, Chris, Kent, Helen, and Jimmy each bring their own personalities to the mix — and some days, it feels like we’re running a reality show — but they all follow Angela’s lead. And let me tell you, they don’t disappoint.

Angela is someone you look up to — not just because of everything she’s achieved in golf and in life, but because of who she is. I mean, how lucky are we to have had an LPGA Hall of Famer right here in Stamford? I try to keep up with my swing, but compared to Angela’s accomplishments, my golf game looks more like a very expensive comedy routine.

But here’s the thing about Angela — she’s someone you don’t want to disappoint. And not because she’s intimidating — far from it — but because she’s an incredible human being. She’s deeply committed to this community and to the charities she supports. Her approach to business is simple but rare: community first, profit second.

Whether it’s local amateur tournaments, her unwavering support for junior golfers, or the countless charity events she’s organized, Angela’s focus has always been on making a positive impact. And she has.

I know we’re in good hands with Keith stepping into her shoes. Not only because he’s excellent at what he does, but because he understands — and lives — the values Angela instilled in all of us. That legacy is already visible in him and in the entire Sterling Farms team. Angela took the time to mentor and nurture every one of them — and that investment will carry on for years to come.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have Angela at Sterling Farms for 31 years. She’s left a lasting legacy — a deep footprint — and she’s made this community stronger, better, and more connected.

Angela, thank you for your love, your leadership, and your dedication.  Congratulations on a stellar career — and enjoy every minute of your well-earned retirement.

Fondly,
Joe McHugh
SFMC President

Also a shout out to my amazing tournament committee…these events take a lot of time in planning, organizing, and executing.  These guys do this week in week out as volunteers on top of their day jobs and busy lives…Bart Weissman, Dave Persaud, and Mitchell Schepps.  Special thanks to those board members who helped today with on course setup of our tee sponsors and proximities…Joe Paladino, Dave Persaud, Greg Collins, and Bill Ward.

Lastly, we had 4 groups that did not complete the scoring in Golf Genius and it resulted in DNFs.  This is an unfortunate example and reinforces why its important to check with your playing partners on the results and to ensure they are properly loaded into Golf Genius before you leave the course.  This is player responsibility for all those playing, not just the scorer, and was clearly communicated in the player information sheet.  I hope this is a lesson learned and is not repeated in future events.

Stay tuned for our Player of the Year finalists and for those that want to keep the good times going…silly season begins in two weeks with Football scoring Stableford…details to follow this week.

August 1, 2025: SFMC Code of Conduct

For over 40 years the Sterling Farms Men’s Club has fostered a history of keen and fair competition on one of the finest public courses in the state, Sterling Farms Golf Course.  Our tournaments are congenial and competitive, and a common love of the game has created many friendships that have lasted for decades. Furthermore, our members are true competitors and over the years have represented well at various tournaments at the state, regional and national levels.  The Men’s Club’s success has not gone unnoticed. The membership has grown to close to 400 members, making it one of the largest public men’s clubs in New England!

One of the reasons for our success is our reputation for fostering camaraderie and a sense of belonging within our community.  How we conduct ourselves on the golf course is a very important component of fostering this reputation.  All SFMC members must adhere to the Sterling Farms player code of conduct policy.

This includes maintaining a positive attitude and refraining from offensive and disrespectful language or behavior towards fellow golfers, staff, and officials. Additionally, if anyone is found to be in violation of the code of conduct policy with behavior that is detrimental to the welfare of golf, the course on which it is played, the Club or the community in general, that person will face disciplinary action that can include expulsion from the club.  This is in accordance with our Club By-Laws Section 7.

For more information on our by-laws, I invite you to go visit our website … www.sterlingfarmsmensclub.com/club-bylaws/

July 31, 2025: 2025 Scholarship Fund Recipients

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am excited to announce the recipients of our Sterling Farms Men’s Club Scholarship Fund.  We had several applications to consider but the two candidates that stood out were…Lorenzo Scorziello, son of SFMC member Steve Scorziello and grandson of Alex Lionetti, and Charles Cook, son of SFMC member Jim Cook and one of our Sterling Farm Golf Shop & junior camp employees.  Lorenzo and Charles were each awarded a check in the amount of $1,000 at our recent Member Guest golf tournament.

Both Charles and Lorenzo are recent high school graduates and will be entering their freshman year of college this fall.  Lorenzo will be attending Indiana University to study Finance and Charles attending Fairfield University with plans to study Economics.

This scholarship program is in its second year of existence and has become an exciting new chapter in the history of the Sterling Farms Men’s Club.  The program is just one way that demonstrates the impact and strength that we have as a golfing community.  In two short years, we have raised just over $21,000 and have awarded $5,000 in scholarship money.  We look forward to seeing the impact that this program will have on both Lorenzo and Charles and will continue to sustainably build this program to impact many more.

I would like to thank long time board member Jim Romaniello for leading this venture along with committee members Bart Weissman and William Ward.  To learn more about our Scholarship program, I invite you to visit our website … www.sterlingfarmsmensclub.com/scholarship/

Thank you all for your continued support and commitment to the club!

May 15, 2025: Summer Rules

Starting Friday, May 16, 2025, Summer Rules are in effect.  This means that you must play the ball down…as it lies.  No more rolling it over in the fairway or on the fringes of the greens.

Additionally, I would like to remind you of our local bunker rule which is you must play the ball down in the bunker as it lies unless your ball ends up in a foot print.  If your ball ends up in a foot print, you will get free relief which entails lift, clean & place within the length of a scorecard, no closer to the hole.  If your ball is a fried egg, play it as it lies.  If your ball is a fried egg in a foot print, you get relief.  The majority of your playing group must agree on the relief for foot prints.

We ask that everyone do their part to take care of the course.  That means replace and fill divots, repair ball marks, and rake the traps after you play your shot.  Taking care of the course will bring good karma.  Let the SFMC set the example and not be the example…Mike and Bek will be happy if we do!
